While there’s been a lot of talk about “shifting cultures” — even within the church, there’s something we must not forget: God has already spoken about the destiny of the world system — “the world and its desires are passing away” (1 John 2:17).
That means no matter how much we polish it, repackage it, or apply “customer care,” the world system is doomed for decay. It’s like the human body — you may nourish it and dress it up, but in the end, it will still return to the dust.
So, if our mission becomes “changing the culture of the world,” we need to pause and ask: how worldly is the church willing to become in order to win the world?
Yes, we can look to Daniel in Babylon as a template. His godly character and faithfulness preserved generations of kings. But notice this: even Daniel’s righteousness couldn’t save Babylon. The empire still fell, because its destiny was destruction.
The same applies to today’s world system. Our task is not to rescue what God has already declared perishing, but to shine as lights within it, pointing men to a Kingdom that cannot be shaken.
So, while we engage, let’s be cautious. Let’s not lose ourselves trying to fix a system whose destiny is already sealed. The book of Revelation shows us the end: a new heaven and a new earth descending from God. That’s the culture we live for, and the one we must embody.
May God give us wisdom to know when to engage and when to separate.
